We live in the internet age where almost all devices can be connected to the internet. For your device to successfully connect, you will need an internet connection. If you have an iPhone you can share the internet connection with any device.
Your iPhone’s “Personal Hotspot”, which turns your iPhone into an internet router, has an option. When the hotspot activates, other devices can link up to your iPhone and use your cellular data for the internet.
Your iPhone’s personal hotspot can eat a lot of internet data, so make sure you have enough to go round.
Here are the steps to enable your iPhone’s Hotspot to be turned on and connected to another device.
Before you can connect you iPhone hotspot to another device, you need to first turn it on.
How to turn on the personal hotspot on your iPhone
- Open the iPhone’s Settings app and select Personal Hotspot.
- Tap the button labeled “Allow Other” to Join. The signal will be broadcasted immediately by your iPhone.
- Tap “Wi-Fi Password” to create a password for your hotspot. This password will be required on all devices connected to your hotspot. If you want to remove anyone from your hotspot, simply change the password.
After you have turned your hotspot on, it’s now time for you to use any of the following methods to connect to it:
Connect via Wi Fi
Connect to your iPhone’s hotspot exactly as you would connect to any Wi Fi network. This is the easiest way.
You can connect to Wi Fi from any device, whether it is a tablet or a computer. Your iPhone’s name should appear beside the two interlocking rings and a regular Wi Fi symbol.
Enter your password and click this option. Your device will automatically connect in a few seconds and you will be online.
Connect via Bluetooth
If you are broadcasting and have Bluetooth enabled on your iPhone, it will send out an Internet signal via Bluetooth.
As before, all you need to do is go into your Bluetooth menu and tap the name of your phone when it appears. Instead of entering your password, you’ll receive a six-digit number. Check that it is the same code on both your iPhones and the other device and tap to pair.
Use a USB cable
This option is available to devices such as computers with USB ports.
Use a USB charging cable to connect your iPhone with your computer. You will see it in the list of internet devices that you can connect to. Click it and you will be connected.
Things to know about personal hotspot
Personal Hotspot lets compatible iPhones share their cellular data connection via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or USB. This is called tethering.
Personal Hotspot acts as a wireless router, sending and receiving data to other devices using your iPhone’s network. It’s a great alternative to using public Wi-Fi hotspots if you have enough data.
How to tell if devices are connected to your personal hotspot
A blue bar will appear at the top of your iPhone screen when other devices are connected to the iPhone hotspot. It can also be seen on the lock screen. The blue bar in iOS 7 and higher shows a number beside a lock or interlocking loops icon. This indicates how many devices have been connected to your phone.
